the university of dayton department of english fosters the understanding of language and literature from rhetorical, creative, critical, historical, comparative, and global perspectives. our graduates are expert readers, writers, and critical thinkers, equipped with skills which allow them to continue to contribute to society in a variety of capacities.
with four undergraduate tracks (literary, writing, teaching, and self-designed) combined with our faculty member’s broad range of expertise, students can learn anything from british literature, linguistics, grant writing, or creative writing.
we offer both a master's degree program and on-line and on-site graduate certificate programs. we offer three tracks of expertise: literary and cultural studies, writing or tesol. graduate certificates are offered for the certificate for teachers of english and tesol.

the university of dayton department of english’s 17th annual litfest will celebrate professor emeritus herbert w. martin, a nationally known poet, performer and scholarly expert on the late dayton native paul laurence dunbar — one of the first african-american poets to gain national recognition.read more
